Webflow gives you full control over design and publishing, but many site owners overlook how AI systems interpret their content. An llms.txt file lets you provide a structured summary of your most important pages so language models have clearer context when referencing your brand. Instead of relying on scattered signals across your site, you can offer a single, curated guide at your domain root. This tutorial walks you through creating, uploading, and structuring an llms.txt file specifically for Webflow sites.

What LLMs.txt Does for a Webflow Site

An llms.txt file lives at the root of your domain, such as yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It is a plain text file that outlines key pages and sections of your site in a clean, readable structure. While search engines use sitemaps to discover pages, AI systems may benefit from a more curated overview that explains what matters most on your site.

For Webflow users, this is especially useful because many Webflow sites are highly visual and modular. Important information can be spread across CMS collections, landing pages, and dynamic templates. LLMs.txt gives you a way to highlight the pages that best represent your services, products, or expertise.

Before You Upload Your File

Make sure you have the following ready:

  • A published Webflow site connected to a custom domain
  • An llms.txt file saved in UTF-8 format
  • A file size under 100 KB

LLMs.txt files are uploaded to your production domain and will not appear on Webflow staging domains.

Step by Step: Upload LLMs.txt in Webflow

Webflow allows you to upload an llms.txt file directly through your site settings.

Step 1: Open Your Site Settings

Log in to Webflow and select the project you want to update. Click Site settings for that project.

Step 2: Go to the SEO Tab

Inside Site settings, open the SEO tab. This section includes advanced search and visibility controls for your site.

Step 3: Locate the LLMs.txt Section

Scroll until you find the LLMs.txt upload area. This is where Webflow lets you attach a file that will be served from your root domain.

Step 4: Upload Your File

Click Upload file and choose your prepared llms.txt file from your computer. Make sure the file is properly formatted and within the size limits.

Step 5: Save Changes

Click Save changes in the Site settings panel to confirm the upload.

Step 6: Publish Your Site

For the file to go live, publish your site to your custom domain. Once published, your file will be accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

How to Structure an Effective LLMs.txt File

Uploading the file is only half the job. The quality of the structure and content inside llms.txt determines how useful it may be for AI systems.

Here's an example from Webflow:

# Title

> Optional description goes here

Optional details go here

## Section name

- [Link title](https://link_url): Optional link details

## Optional

- [Link title](https://link_url)

Use Clear Headings and Sections

Organize your file with a logical structure. Start with a short description of your site, followed by sections that group related links.

Example structure:

  • A top level title with your brand or site name
  • A short summary describing what your company does
  • Sections for services, products, resources, or documentation
  • Bullet lists of important URLs with short descriptions

Write Plain, Direct Descriptions

Avoid marketing slogans or vague phrases. Describe what each page actually offers. Clear language helps AI systems interpret your content more accurately.

Instead of writing a broad tagline, explain your core service, target audience, and main outcomes in simple terms.

Link Only to High Value Pages

Be selective about what you include. Focus on:

  • Core service or product pages
  • Key educational resources or guides
  • Important company or about pages that explain your expertise

Do not include private, internal, or low value pages. LLMs.txt should act as a curated highlight reel of your site.

Keep It Updated

As you add new services, launch products, or publish major content, update your llms.txt file to reflect those changes. An outdated file can point AI systems toward pages that no longer represent your priorities.

Common Issues to Watch For

If your llms.txt file does not appear at yourdomain.com/llms.txt after publishing, double check that:

  • You uploaded the file in Site settings under the SEO tab
  • Your site was published to the correct custom domain
  • The file name is exactly llms.txt and not something like llms.txt.txt

If you update the file but do not see changes immediately, republish your site to push the new version live.

Making LLMs.txt Part of Your AI Visibility Strategy

LLMs.txt should support, not replace, your broader content strategy. Strong site structure, clear on-page content, and well organized collections still matter. This file simply adds another layer of clarity for AI systems that try to summarize or reference your site. Platforms like Helm can help teams consistently produce and optimize the kinds of pages you would want featured in llms.txt, making your efforts more aligned across search and AI discovery.

A Simple File That Adds Direction

Treat it as a living document that evolves with your site, and it can quietly support your visibility as AI driven discovery continues to grow.
